The Midnight Special has a larger headtube that can accommodate a more modern tapered 1-1/2" fork (eg for a carbon fork). It also uses the newer road flat mount disc brakes. More importantly it uses thru-axle wheels (12x100 front, 12x142 rear), however because Surly is Surly and has to spec weird dropouts they are thru-axle wheels on open dropouts.
